ACCA President receives Recognition Certificate as a Foreign Awarding Body
The Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) has granted Recognition status to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). On Monday June 29th, at the ALGICO Plaza ACCA President – Brendan Murtagh was presented with the institution’s Certificate of Recognition as a foreign awarding body by ACTT Deputy Chairman – Dr. Alvin Ashton. As a first time visitor to our twin islands, Mr. Murtagh was also presented with a tuned miniature steel pan.
Mr. Murtagh remarked, “Recognition of ACCA as an awarding body is a significant landmark in our history in this region… it places even more confidence in the minds of students that they are pursuing a prestigious qualification of global relevance, and is an indication of the very high standards to which ACCA subscribes”. ACTT’s Chairman, Dr. Janet Stanley –Marcano shared the sentiments of Mr. Murtagh when she stated, “Through recognition of foreign awarding bodies like ACCA, ACTT ensures that our students have access to internationally recognized qualifications… and our recognition process ensures that holders of recognized transnational awards have acquired comparable skills and competencies to those expected in the country of the awarding institution”.
Recognition is viewed as the approval by an authorized agency, of the quality and acceptability of a legitimate awarding body and the qualifications it awards. ACTT is the authority established by an Act of Parliament No. 16 for the recognition of the quality and acceptability of legitimate post secondary and tertiary institutions, whether overseas or transnational/ foreign and the qualifications they award.
In order to protect the interests of students, employers and the wider national community, ACTT has been empowered by law to recognize accredited programmes and awards of foreign institutions operating locally under the following categories of Governance, Administration and Plans for Provision. Recognition status from ACTT means that the Council will recognize ACCA’s accredited qualifications delivered at registered institutions in Trinidad and Tobago. Other institutions like ACCA, which had their qualifications recognized by ACTT include Educational Development International (EDI); City and Guilds of London Institute and Association of Business Executives (ABE).
Alongside the Recognition of transnational/ foreign institutions, ACTT is continuing its registration drive which seeks to have all Post Secondary and Tertiary Level Institutions (TLIs) adhere to its deadline of July 8th, 2009. ACTT has, to date, granted registration status to 58 institutions across the country.
