Minister Karim pays tribute to Servol Pioneers

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education met with members of Servol Limited to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) at the Ministry’s Office at the International Waterfront Complex, Port of Spain on Monday March 12th 2012.

This MoA serves to reconfirm the commitment of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education to providing support for two (2) key Servol programmes, namely the Hi-Tech Programme and the Advanced Skills Training Programme. These programmes have been funded by the Ministry since 2006. The Agreement also provides for the funding of the operational costs of the Adolescent Development Programme and the Skills Programme by the Ministry. As a result, the Ministry will provide to Servol a total of $27,535,531 annually.

Both the Ministry and Servol agree that the MoA will provide the structure and basis for the provision of funding for these programmes offered by Servol. This agreement will also serve to facilitate a more efficient and effective monitoring of the administrative, financial and operational performance of these programmes.

In attendance were the Chairperson of Servol, Sister Ruth Montrichard, Executive Director of Servol, Mr. Marin Pacheco, Deputy Executive Director of Servol, Mrs. Allison Haynes Wilson and Mr. Jaggernauth Soom, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education.

Sister Montrichard conveyed her deepest gratitude to the Minister and his Ministry stating that the money will assist in paying the salaries of the 400 staff members employed by Servol. She was also pleased that part of the funding will be used for the training of staff, which she considers to be vital to the future development of Servol, and believes that cooperation with the Ministry has helped to develop and empower people who would normally not have the opportunity to reach their potential, due to low levels of literacy, demotivation or financial problems.

Minister Karim expressed his honour to be associated with SERVOL and praised the pioneers of Servol, with particular mention of Sister Montrichard and Father Gerry Pantin. Minister Karim further stated that these pioneers developed Servol not only as a life skills project but as a life enhancing and empowering one.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Minister Karim on Friday 9th March, when he attended a Presentation of Certificates function at the Advanced Skills Training Centre (ASTC) for Servol tutors who had successfully completed a “Train the Trainers” programme offered by the Metal Industries Company (MIC). These tutors were exposed to 112 hours of intense training. In his feature address to the training recipients, Minister Karim paid tribute to the founders of the Servol programme, and in addition to Sister Montrichard and Father Gerry Pantin, the Minister praised the support provided by the Catholic Church and other contributors such as Mr. Clive Pantin, a former Minister of Education. He also spoke about his involvement in the establishment of Servol’s Chaguanas Life Centre with former Presentation College Principal, Brother Dominic Brunnock and other distinguished persons from the Chaguanas area, and was high in praise for one of his role models, and an icon in the field of education in Trinidad and Tobago, Sister Paul D’Ornellas, who, for many years, served as the Principal of St. Joseph’s Convent in Port of Spain.
