Students’ Facilities to be opened at the San Fernando General Hospital

Senator the Honourable Minister Fazal Karim visited the San Fernando General Hospital on Wednesday 7th March, 2012, for a tour of the soon to be opened facilities for Medical Sciences students. This recently refurbished building is the result of collaboration between the Ministry of Health through the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA), and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education (MSTTE) through the University of the West Indies (UWI), with both Minister Fuad Khan and Minister Fazal Karim driving the efforts. Accompanying the Minister on his tour of the facilities were Mr. Jaggernauth Soom, Permanent Secretary, MSTTE, Dr. Lackram Bodoe, Chairman of the SWRHA, Mr. Anil Gosine, CEO of the SWRHA, Professor Samuel Ramsewak, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mr. Rabindra Moonan, former Deputy Mayor of San Fernando, along with representatives from UWI, the SWRHA and MSTTE.

These student facilities, which were funded by the Ministry of Health at a cost of approximately $13 million, will have a three-fold function, and will comprise of student accommodation, training facilities and a Students’ Activities Centre. The primary purpose of these facilities is to provide accommodation for students who are enrolled at the UWI and are required to complete their internship at the San Fernando General Hospital. This is expected to redound with benefits for many students who are faced with the high cost of rental accommodation in and around San Fernando. In a bid to create safer and less costly accommodations for these students, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education embarked upon this project, which will cater for approximately twenty-eight (28) students.

Additionally, given that the San Fernando General Hospital is positioned as a teaching hospital, this refurbished building will also house training facilities, catering to approximately one hundred (100) students, and equipped with video conference equipment and wireless internet. These students will therefore be able to benefit from both face to face and online instruction. This will also facilitate the future intake and training of more medical sciences students, since classrooms at Mount Hope have reached maximum capacity, and will be equipped with a recreational area aimed at developing more all-rounded students.
