Here’s your chance to get involved in the development of St. Augustine!  The St. Augustine Education City Committee of MTEST is hard at work as St. Augustine and its environs grow into one of the first university towns in the region. On June 25th, 2013 the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training in partnership with the Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development contracted a consultant to develop an Urban Design and Land Use Planning Strategy for the St. Augustine Education.

The Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme is now under MTEST

The Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme is now under the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training! The programme has moved from the Office of the Prime Minister to the MTEST head office. You can find them now at the International Waterfront Complex, Levels 16, Tower C, #1a Wrightson Road Port of Spain. You can also call them at (868) 625-1380 or send a fax to (868)623-8585.  The government of Trinidad and Tobago invites citizens pursuing post-secondary or undergraduate studies to apply for financial assistance through the programme now! OJT Sectoral takes flight in the airline industry

Twenty-five young persons will commence training in yet another new sector for the On-the-Job Training programme's OJT Sectoral initiative. The programme, which currently employs 7,000 trainees within the public and private sectors across Trinidad and Tobago, will now expand its scope of training to the airline industry sector. Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, made this announcement today, at the launch of OJT Airports at the National Airports Authority in Piarco. This initiative he said will "allow a lot of young people access to employment opportunities and improve their quality of life...as the programme has been strategically reviewed to ensure that graduates are exposed to training that is directly aligned to their academic development."

Trainees begin a promising future with new Pt. Lisas apprenticeship programme


“The trainee of today is the PhD of tomorrow.” These were the words of encouragement Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) imparted to several new trainees at the historic launch of the Pt Lisas Industrial Apprenticeship Programme (PLIAP) at the Point Lisas Industrial Estate. His audience comprised of the first crop of trainees in the programme as well as several key stakeholders in the energy industry. The minister’s enthusiasm for the new initiative was palpable as he talked about the programme which is projected to produce up to seven hundred Journeymen and therefore make a valuable contribution to the energy industry and by extension our nation’s human resource capital.

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) proudly opened the National Training Agency’s (NTA) 12th consecutive National Career Fair and Skills Expo at the Centre of Excellence recently before an audience of stakeholders and students from various schools. Over the years, the annual event has attracted thousands of citizens of this country including students, apprentices, the unemployed and many other interested stakeholders. Several companies set up booths and displays to attract the many visitors walking the room eager to garner useful information on jobs and skills training across the country.

Look out for the future Technokids Convention

The children of this nation can soon look forward to a local convention which will expose them to a whole new world of technology and innovation.  Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) made this announcement  recently during the graduation programme of the very first TechnoKids programme.  One hundred and twenty five children between the ages of six and nine gathered at the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre to receive their certificates after spending four weeks immersed in age appropriate technology related learning.

MTEST sign the Memorandum of Understanding

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) plans to work with the Ministry of National Security and the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development to examine the process of providing work permits to foreign nationals.  Speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ministry, the Employers’ Consultative Association (ECA), the Trinidad and Tobago Local Content Chamber and the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturer’s Association (TTMA), Minister Karim explained how it would be important to look at who was provided with work permits to ensure that our own citizens could not fill the vacant positions.

Several proud parents gathered to watch as their children began a new educational journey  as MTEST launched  a new initiative called TechnoKids at the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Centre on Saturday July 13, 2013. One hundred and twenty children were present at the event which featured skits, dance and song to entertain them and acclimatize the gathered parents and stakeholders to the benefits of the programme.

Employees Of Local Governament Receive COSTAATT Scholarship

Fifty employees of the Ministry of Local Government have received scholarships for a degree programme at the College of Science, Technology and the Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago (COSTAATT). The lucky recipients were recognized at a recent event held at the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure head office.  The recipients were chosen from the staff of the ministry to pursue the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Environmental Health from COSTAATT. The staff members will pursue their degree programmes full time while receiving their salaries.

MTEST Launches First Worker Productivity School

Just as school is out for most of the students of this country, several construction workers at the OAS job site in Golconda are picking up their school bags as they will soon begin classes at this country’s first worker productivity school. Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) observed the concept of this type of schooling first hand during an official visit to Brazil earlier this year. Speaking at the launch of the OAS Productivity School on Tuesday June 18, 2013, he enthusiastically described his observations.
