Minister Karim: NGC To Fuel The Energy Of Education In T&T

The National Energy Science Centre (NESC) and the NGC CNG Company Limited today signed a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing a partnership that will expand the scope of training opportunities in the energy sector. The CNG Maintenance Technician Programme is a three-month training programme that is open to persons with interest in working in the energy sector. The programme, which has a capacity to train up to 25 persons per quarter, is expected to produce 100 CNG maintenance technician graduates over the next calendar year.

Award winning Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai visited Trinidad and Tobago from July 27 – August 1, 2014 as a guest of MTEST’s agency the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Her visit was a part of UTT’s 10th anniversary celebrations which began on January 31, 2014. Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) personally invited the young champion for education, so she could bring her inspiring message to the leaders, educators and students of Trinidad and Tobago.

Residents of the Palo Seco area were no doubt pleased to see the National Energy Skills Center Palo Seco campus open for training once more. Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) and Mr. Fitzgerald Jeffrey, MP, La Brea were present to cut the ribbon at the facility which will provide welcome training opportunities to more residents in the area.

The government of Trinidad and Tobago invites citizens pursuing post-secondary or undergraduate studies to send in applications for financial assistance through the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training’s Financial Assistance (Studies) Programme. Eligible citizens must be residing in Trinidad and Tobago. They must also be enrolled in an approved accredited programme and be pursuing a post-secondary or their first undergraduate qualification locally or regionally.

Recently, MTEST was excited to host twenty-five local Spanish secondary school teachers from across the country for a special one-day workshop called “Building Oral Competencies using ICT”. The workshop was held at the Social Sciences Computer Lab at the University of the West Indies and was facilitated by educational technologist, Ms. Sandra Figaro-Henry from the UWI School of Education and Murella Sambucharan, curriculum officer from the Ministry of Education.

TechnoKids has launched again!

Three hundred and thirty-six TechnoKids were excited to get going on the day of the 2nd launch of the educational children’s programme.  The festive event was held at the National Energy Skills Centre auditorium in Pt. Lisas on Saturday July 12, 2014. The programme is designed to expose young children to technology in order to better prepare them for secondary school and the workforce in later years.The initiative grew out of an idea of Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST). The children- aged six to nine – will receive instruction at various centres under MTEST agencies around the country for four weeks.  They will be exposed to beginners programming, graphics, sound and music, and (for the first time) animation.

The ministry’s Secretariat for the Implementation of Spanish (SIS) is pleased to present a free one-day workshop entitled “Building Oral Competencies using ICT” for secondary school  Spanish teachers. The workshop will be held on Friday July 25, 2014 at the University of the West Indies (UWI). Participants will be exposed to different methods of incorporating technology into the classroom in order to enhance the learning experience for their students with a special emphasis on building oral proficiency.

The free open access platform will feature learning resources which are now available to the people of Trinidad and Tobago on television and the internet.  Minister Karim has long expressed a wish that this type of content be made easily available to the people of this country so people can learn easily from wherever they are located.

May 29, 2014– The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was present to join in the celebration of the launch of the new MIC Institute of Technology (MIC) in her constituency in Penal on Tuesday May 27, 2014. During her address at the compound of the centre, the Prime Minister expressed her satisfaction with the opportunities which the facility would provide. Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) paid homage to many former Caroni workers at the formal opening ceremony of the National Energy Skills Centre (NESC) Woodford Lodge Technology Campus on Friday May 23, 2014.  During his feature address to the assembled stakeholders, Minister Karim singled out the former workers who he had invited to attend and made reference to the fact that previously Woodford Lodge was the Transport and Engineering Department of Caroni 1975 Ltd and employed approximately 250 people. May 19, 2014– Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) made an  official visit to  the University of the Southern Caribbean to commission the Dr. Timothy S. Greaves Men’s Residence Hall on Monday May 19, 2014.  The recently completed hall has 100 rooms housing 200 male students. His Excellency Guillermo Vazquez Moreno, Cuban Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) head office on Tuesday May 13, 2014. He met Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) and had a meeting with the staff of the Spanish Implementation Secretariat (SIS) of the ministry. The facility is located at 22 O’Meara Road, Arima at the office of Member of Parliament, the Honourable Anil Roberts, Minister of Sport. Karim Launches Job Recruitment Website For Students

 

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) has launched the first tertiary education job recruitment website in Trinidad and Tobago at an event at the Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme’s (YTEPP) head office in Chaguanas. The YTEPP e-Employment Services website will allow trainees of the organization to upload their resumes to a “digital skills bank” atjobs.ytepp.gov.tt.  They will be able to get their log in information through YTEPP. Employers can access the site and also have the option to post details of their job vacancies.
