OJT Graduation

On Saturday 14th October 2006 at the Centre of Excellence, the Ministry of Science Technology and Tertiary Education's On-the-Job Training Programme held for the first time in its four year history, a joint graduation comprising of trainees from all regions in Trinidad.
Senator the Honourable Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the Minister of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education delivered the feature address in which he encouraged the graduates to focus on empowerment, achievement and personal development.
Our guest speaker, Lara Quentrall-Thomas of Regency Recruitment delivered a motivational presentation entitled "Engineer Your Career" which was focused on preparing the graduates for the job market. Her dynamic and essential address enlightened our graduates on job searching, resume writing and the interview process.
Senator the Honourable Minister Satish Ramroop, Minister if State in the Ministry of Science Technology and Tertiary Education, developed the acronym WATCH, which stands for; Words, Actions, Thoughts, Conduct and Heart. This simple advice is appropriate for young persons needing guidance for today's world of work.
The graduation incorporated a Career Fair where graduates had the opportunity to explore some of Trinidad and Tobago's established and successful organizations as well as to make vital contacts, to assist them as they enter the job market. The companies that participated in the fair were; NEDCO, Guardian Holdings Ltd., TDC, Clico Trinidad, Cher Mere, NALIS, Families in Action, ETeck, Douglas and Associates, Petrotrin, NTA, NIB, TSTT, Eve Anderson Associates and COSTAATT.
Our Master of Ceremonies, Errol Fabien provided us with comic relief and a kept the evenings events moving smoothly. Entertainment consisted of Latin and Indian dances, a rousing Rapso performance by Ozzy Magic and a riveting performance by the local string ensemble, The Alternative Quartet.

On behalf of the On-the-Job Training Unit, the Life Skills Unit conducted two information sessions on HIV/AIDS awareness. These sessions took place at the Ministry of Science Technology & Tertiary Education's Training Room on Thursday 30th December 2006. The focus of these sessions was to educate Trainees about the risk, prominence, facts and implications associated with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Each session was facilitated by the Life Skills Unit: Marissia Alexander, Candace Moore, Naomi George, Andrea Chelerie and Jerrell Drakes.
Both sessions began with a reflection on "My dream: my ideal sexual partner," where trainees were asked to discuss in pairs or reflect individually on the characteristics of their ideal sexual partner. Trainees then engaged in "The Signature game" facilitated by Andrea Chelerie. In this exercise, trainees were asked to go around the room with pen and paper, soliciting the signatures of their fellow trainees, unaware of the consequence. At the end of the exercise, each trainee was asked to stand followed by the persons whose signatures s/he had successfully obtained to graphically illustrate the eternal bond that one has with another when consenting to engage in sexual acts. Marissia Alexander then continued with a short informative True and False interactive session, dispelling common myths concerning sex-related issues. Thereafter, trainees were briefed on detailed recommendations on practicing safe sex in all aspects of sexual activity. Handouts containing a list of commonly contracted sexually transmitted infections, their causes, symptoms and treatment were distributed.
The latter portion of the session was devoted to discussing the issue of HIV/AIDS as a regional and international pandemic. An optimistic slant was given to its occurrence in Trinidad and Tobago in an attempt to emphasize the fact that persons diagnosed with HIV can continue to live fulfilling, prosperous lives. Evidence showed that the Medical Research Centre pioneered in sustaining the lives of hundreds of persons for more than three years after having been diagnosed with the virus. According to research, there are also a number of discordant couples in which one partner was HIV-free while the other was not. This segment then ended with a debate on the international dilemma of dealing with HIV transmission as a criminal offence. This discussion was facilitated by Candace Moore and Naomi George. Using two articles printed by the Express Newspaper, trainees sought to address the conditions of establishing intent or recklessness in committing the act, establishing direct transmission and the relevance of situational context. Among the social and cultural concerns examined, were the risk of increasing stigma, discouraging persons from getting tested and promoting the development of an ensconcing climate for a disease that has a widespread impact.

| The Honourable Fitzgerald Jeffrey, Minister of State in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Tertiary Education will be delivering the opening speech at the Annual Job and Trade Expo on Thursday 23rd, April. The event will take place at the Southwest regional Indoor Sports Arena, Egypt Village, Pt. Fortin. The Ministry will be setting up a post for issuing of brochures as well as promoting the programmes offered. This Job and Trade Expo is being ogranised by the Rotary Club of Pt. Fortin and the National Training Agency (NTA)
